Nadi = Energy Channel.
In Yoga it is said that there are 72,000 Nadis', energy channels in the body. These energy channels are constantly being stimulated, over stimulated or blocked by internal thoughts and beliefs, toxins, and the general impact of our individual lifestyles.
The 3 main nadis' central to yoga practice are Ida, pingala, and sushumna. Balancing them is of great importance to the mind, body and spirit.
Much of our concentration on the spine, chakras and postures is concerned with activating and balancing the ida and pingala nadis, so they can flow freely around the Sushumna nadi, through the chakras up to the anja chakra, the third eye. There are also pranayama practices to support their flow and purification.
Our Sushumna nadi is the main nadi in the center of the spinal cord. The main road from the depths of the earth to the heights of heaven. The central point, state, or condition between all extreme conditions, internal and external. It runs from the base of the spine to the crown of the head, passing through each of the seven chakras on its course.
The ida and pingala nadis spiral around the sushumna nadi crossing each other at every chakra. The ida, the lunar nadi begins and ends on the left side of sushumna. Pingala, the solar nadi, begins and ends to the right.
Each nadi has strong individual characteristics. Hence our concern with balancing them so one does not dominate or create extremes in our mind and body.
The relationship between ida and pingala reflects our internal dance between intuition and rationality, conscious and sub-consciousness, and the right and left brain hemispheres. Imbalances and blockages in these energy channels can result in personality, behavioural and health problems. So when we are unbalanced by negative blockages one side may dominate.
By bringing both sides into balance our prana, our life force, can move freely without conflict. This will then impact on the rest of our lives. We will find ourselves more relaxed, and be less likely to act in extremes. We will feel more centred.
